Lecture Summaries

Day 1
Students will be introduced to the course.  An overview of the course contents and the course outline will be addressed.  Expectations and requirements to be successful will be the focus of today's lecture.  We will conduct a review of the common elements and the periodic table.  Chemistry puzzles will be completed to help students remember the names of the elements.  Various careers in chemistry as well as what chemists do in society will be presented.  Two assignments have been handed out.  The Greatest Canadian Chemist is due September 16 (September 10 is a lab day in room 148 for this assignment) and Careers in Chemistry is due September 19 (September 13 is a lab day in room 148 for this assignment).  Students are reminded to bring their lab books, calculators and writing utensils to class on the daily basis.

Day 2 WHMIS and HHPS

Today we finished the element puzzles. We then examined WHMIS and HHPS symbols as well as went over lab rules.  Textbook p. 479 was used to complete charts.  A brief note was taken and a classroom map was created.
*WHMIS and HHPS symbol sheets are to be placed in the lab book.

Safety in the science lab quiz

Day 3 Properties of Substances

Hand in before the bell: Safety Quiz
Today we examined properties of substances that can be used in identification in qualitative analysis.  We will learn about the Physical Properties of Matter. We went over historical models of the atom from Democritus to Rutherford.  We practiced using the atomic number and mass number to determine the number of electrons, neutrons and protons in an atom.  We practiced using full and short hand Bohr-Rutherford diagrams.  We looked at isotopes and radioisotopes.  Students are to complete Building Scientific Knowledge for homework and place it in their lab books.

Day 4 - changed for Day 7 due to photo interruptions!

Today students took up Building Scientific Knowledge.  Make sure all the corrections have been completed in a different colour.  We reviewed matter and its properties both physical and chemical.  We classified substances as pure or mixtures.  We worked on determining the difference between a chemical and a physical change.  We had a demonstration of a chemical change.  Students were to complete identifying Chemical and Physical changes for homework.

Day 6
Today students worked on their assignment: Great Canadian Chemists in the computer lab 148.  Reminder to use APA format when citing.

Day 7

Students reviewed the parts of the periodic table. Students built atoms using the NOVA app on iPad.  Calculations of protons, neutrons and electrons had to be mastered to complete the activity.  Electrons were seen orbiting the nucleus in three dimensions.
MONDAY OPP visit, don't be late.

Day 8

Students worked on their periodic table terminology.  The Periodic Table handout was taken up as well as the subatomic particles sheet.  Students reviewed groups and families.
Students learned what happens to atoms when they get to the excited state.
Students examined qualitative analysis of money.
Detecting Counterfeit Canadian Currency.  Text Book p. 27 Q.1-6

Day 9

Students will be working with the O.P.P. in a hands-on workshop dealing with counterfeit currency.

Day 13

Hand in before the bell: Career in Chemistry Assignment with the rubric.

Students learn't about ionic, polar covalent, non-polar covalent and metallic bonding.  We examined the periodic trend for electronegtivity.  Across a period from left to right increases and decreases down a group.  We examined how to predict bond type based on electronegativity.  We simulated 3d bonding.
